Himalayan Wild Yak restaurant in Ashburn, VA Himalayan Wild Yak is one of the most talked about new restaurants in Ashburn’s Brambleton Town Center. Named for the bovine indigenous to the Himalayan mountains of Tibet, Mongolia and Nepal, the wild yak is a healthy, lean alternative to beef.

A new restaurant focusing on Nepalese cuisine is planning on opening in the Brambleton Town Center this coming spring. It will be called Himalayan Wild Yak and it’s coming from Dip Magar, the owner of the Royal Nepal Restaurant over in Alexandria. Himalayan Wild Yak will open on the first floor of the restaurant space next door to the Regal Fox movie theater. That’s the spot that was previously the Lost Rhino Retreat.

As restaurant mascots go, I’d be hard-pressed to come up with a catchier one than “Rocky,” the charm at one of the best new restaurants in Northern Virginia. Big and hairy, he’s the first thing you see when you step inside Himalayan Wild Yak in Ashburn. Tuk Gurung, who co-owns the Nepalese restaurant with fellow chef Keshar Jarga and Dip Jarga Magar, says they wanted the interior to be as distinctive as the cooking at the Brambleton Town Center restaurant.

Himalayan Wild Yak [22885 Brambleton Plaza, Ashburn] is now serving Nepalese food in Ashburn with a menu abounding with yak dishes: marinated and grilled yak appetizer; yak sausage; yak biryani; and yak fried rice; plus tea polished with whipped yak butter, milk, pink salt, and sugar. Goat, bison, pork, chicken, and lamb make the menu as well, plus Indian dishes like butter chicken and chana masala. The interior is anchored by none other than a taxidermy yak.
